Child also died – dead after grandstand collapse in arena

Date:

At least four people were killed when part of the stands of an arena in Colombia collapsed. More than 60 people were injured, Tolima Department Governor Ricardo Orozco said. Among the dead was a three-year-old child, according to the head of the State Institute for Family Welfare, Lina María Arbeláez, on Twitter.

Videos circulating on social media show wooden stands packed with people collapsing on Sunday on one side of the bullring in the town of El Espinal, about 150 kilometers southwest of the capital Bogotá. The cause was initially unclear.

A bullfighting event called “Corraleja” took place in the arena for the Peter and Paul festival. There were hundreds of people in the audience.

According to a report in the newspaper “El Tiempo”, a bull caused panic in the streets of the city after the incident.

President Ivan Duque announced investigations on Twitter. His chosen successor, Gustavo Petro, wrote that he asked the country’s local governments to stop allowing events involving the killing of people or animals.

He also recalled a similar tragedy: In 1980, a crowded grandstand in the arena in Sincelejo, the largest in Colombia, collapsed. At least 300 people died.
