Visited Bucha – Zelenskyj: negotiations after “genocide” more difficult

Date:

After the massacre among civilians became known, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to the destroyed city of Bucha. War crimes have been committed in Bucha, Selenskyj told journalists on Monday in the town about 25 kilometers northwest of the capital Kiev. For example, a village leader and her family are said to have been shot and buried. “The world will recognize this as genocide,” Zelenskyy said. He sees the continuation of peace negotiations with Russia more difficult.

It is “difficult” to continue peace talks with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday during a visit to Bucha northwest of Kiev. As reported, more than 300 civilian corpses were collected there after the withdrawal of Russian troops last week. “The world will recognize this as genocide,” the president said. Ukraine blames Russian troops for the massacre, while Moscow denies it.

Seem covered in sand
“The occupiers suspected that they were collaborating with our army and giving us locations for our artillery,” Interior Ministry’s Anton Herashchenko said on Monday. An example is the village of Motyshyn west of the capital. The Russians shot and buried the village leader Olha Sucheko, her husband Ihor Sucheko and their son Olexandr. Herashchenko showed their corpses partially covered with sand: “This scum tortured, butchered and killed the whole family.”

Information not checked
Reuters has not yet been able to verify this information. Russia dismisses the accusations as “Ukrainian and Western propaganda” and speaks of a “provocation”.

In addition, released Ukrainian POWs reported possible Russian violations of the Geneva Convention. According to Ukrainian ombudsman Lyudmyla Denisova, they were denied food, kept in cellars and had to take off their uniforms. The Russian government has not yet issued a statement.

Peace negotiations still possible
Despite these incidents, the Ukrainian leader said during his visit on Monday that it is still possible to negotiate peace with Russia. “Ukraine must have peace. The longer the Russian Federation delays the negotiation process, the worse it will be for them.”

Ukraine’s Attorney General has announced an autopsy on the bodies to solve the crime. According to German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, the International Criminal Court has already started investigations “so that the truth, and even the whole truth, may come to light”. Germany is making two million euros extra and its own specialists available for this. In addition, the federal government will increasingly support the defense of Ukraine. The EU is tightening sanctions against Russia.
