By 2027, 16.2 billion euros – more than ever before – will flow into the coffers of universities. The number of places to study medicine is also expected to continue to increase.
During the coalition negotiations, every euro is currently being turned over twice to somehow close the gaps in the budget – in any case, there will be no cuts to the universities, it was announced on Monday. On the contrary: the universities can plan for the next three years with a record budget of 16.2 billion euros. “With this amount we have not only laid a solid foundation for the efficient further development of the universities. It is also a clear commitment from the federal government to make Austria a strong and competitive location,” said Minister of Education Martin Polaschek.
Two-thirds of the money should flow to those two areas where the need for skilled labor is particularly great. This mainly concerns the MINT area (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, technology) and the life sciences together with medicine.
The investment program “Med-Impuls 2030” will also be continued. This provides for the expansion of study places in medicine. Another 100 places must be added over the next three years to actually achieve the target of 2,000 new students in 2028.
“The universities are satisfied with the performance agreements. It is well invested taxpayers’ money – especially given the tense economic situation,” explains Brigitte Hütter, the newly appointed president of the Austrian University Conference.
