Jetstreams at work – Day of the dormouse: setting course for summer

Date:

Monday is Dormouse Day – a special date for meteorologists: According to legend, it is the day that “sets the course for the coming summer weather”, according to the Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG). In any case, it will be midsummer warm to sweltering hot in the coming week. There is also a high chance of thunderstorms, especially on Monday evening.

“Statistical analyzes show that the jet stream, a band of strong winds in higher atmospheric layers, stabilizes around Dormouse Day,” says a Facebook post from ZAMG. Since the jet has a major influence on the weather in Europe, depending on the position of the strong wind band, it is either stable and hot or unstable and often cool.

For a hot summer, the jet stream should be as far north as possible. Any low pressure areas are then deflected towards Northern Europe. Further south, the Azores High develops. The well-known farmer’s rule, “How the weather behaves on the edible dormouse is ordered for seven weeks,” is based on this mechanism.

By the way: Due to the reform of the Gregorian calendar, according to ZAMG, the date of the dormouse lottery day has actually been postponed to the first week of July. If one now assumes that dormouse day falls only in the first week of July, an analysis from 1991 to 2020 has shown that the above farmer rule is about 70 percent correct.

ben mounting high air pressure and subtropical warm air masses provide plenty of sunshine and summer temperatures. While in most parts of the country the sun usually shines from a mostly cloudless sky, some cumulus clouds form over the alpine peaks during the day. Particularly in Tyrol, in Vorarlberg and in Salzburg, individual showers or thunderstorms can develop until the evening. The wind is usually weak, only moderate on the eastern edge of the Alps, temporarily even strong, from directions around the southeast. In the morning the temperature is between 14 degrees in the higher alpine valleys and 22 degrees in the center of Vienna, by midday maximum values are expected between 26 degrees in the west and up to 35 degrees in the east.

Arriving at with a south-westerly current Tuesday unstable air masses from southwestern Europe to Austria. This means that cumulus clouds, rain showers and thunderstorms are already forming in the morning. The chance of thunderstorms generally remains high in the afternoon. However, the center of gravity of the precipitation shifted to the southern side of the Alps. A moderate to strong westerly wind will blow temporarily in the morning hours in the north and east. In addition, however, there is a moderate south-easterly wind blowing on the edge of the Alps. 15 to 23 degrees is expected in the morning and 25 to 33 degrees during the day.

All details about the Austrian weather can be found here.

For the western half of Austria, the Wednesday Unstable weather, with variable and sometimes strong cloud cover, some rain and thunderstorms are to be expected. In the east and southeast the sun shines much more often, regionally also almost continuously. During the day only loose showers and thunderstorm cells are expected, but they can be violent at certain points. Apart from thunderstorms the wind will be fairly weak, only in the east the wind will blow from the southeast to the south at times moderate to strong. Morning temperatures are between 15 and 23. Maximum daytime temperatures vary widely, between 23 and 36 degrees from west to east.

ben Thursday From the current perspective, much of Austria will see mostly friendly, often sunny midsummer weather, with some areas becoming very hot again. Large cumulus clouds can form anywhere over the mountains, but in general the chances of rain and thunderstorms should decrease significantly compared to the previous days. Winds will be light to moderate from varying directions. Early temperatures are predicted to be between 14 and 23 degrees, with daily highs typically between 27 and 33 degrees.

approaching from the west Freitag however, there is a prominent fracture zone. It is not yet possible to estimate exactly how far this will go eastwards during the day, according to ZAMG. Especially from Vorarlberg to Upper Austria, unstable weather with showers and a few thunderstorms is expected and temperatures are dropping. In the east and southeast it will probably remain sunny and hot for a long time before thunderstorm activity can also occur in the evening. In addition, in the run-up to the disturbance there will be regional moderate or even strong southeast to southerly winds, which are then replaced by westerly winds. Early temperatures between 15 and 22 are expected. The maximum daytime temperatures vary from region to region, from west to east around 22 to 35 degrees, but it can also become warmer in places.
