For months, the army and police were in constant action as as many as 3,500 refugees from Hungary crossed the border into Burgenland week after week. In the autumn of 2023, the series of large-scale attacks was abruptly stopped.

The smuggling mafia changed its routes to avoid increased measures by investigators. At the beginning of 2024, fewer than twenty migrants were stranded in this country every seven days. However, the number of visitors increased slightly until the summer. The number of registrations varied between 90 and 150 per week – and the trend is slowly increasing!
350 refugees in one week
At the end of November, 239 refugees and five arrests of smugglers were reported within seven days. Last week from December 2 to 8, 350 illegal immigrants were discovered, mainly in the districts of Neusiedl am See and Oberpullendorf.
“Not a single smuggler could be caught during this period,” it is said. This year, a total of 4,700 refugees were received in Burgenland. The police stopped 38 smugglers.
