Germany, Britain and France issued a joint statement strongly condemning Iran’s recent moves to expand its nuclear program. Recent activities increase fears of an impending escalation.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Islamic Republic plans, among other things, to increase the number of centrifuges and expand the infrastructure for uranium enrichment.
The measures would increase Iran’s stockpiles of highly enriched uranium, for which there is no credible civil justification anyway, said the E3 states as remaining partners in the 2015 nuclear deal. “We urgently call on Iran to reverse these steps and stop its nuclear escalation stop immediately.”
Just a small step to a nuclear weapon
Iran’s latest plans could increase its 60 percent uranium production capacity from 4.7 kilograms to more than 34 kilograms per month, the IAEA said recently. According to experts, a nuclear warhead would require approximately 50 kilograms of 60 percent uranium. The government in Tehran says it is not seeking nuclear weapons.
Iran promised in 2015 to limit its nuclear program. In return, the sanctions were lifted. But in 2018, Donald Trump, during his first term as US president, ordered the withdrawal from this pact. Since then, Iran has gradually ramped up its nuclear program.
