About a month ago, the housing associations of Euskal Herria called for mobilization, under the slogan “For the right to housing, let’s put an end to business!”
About a month ago, the housing unions of Euskal Herria convened a demonstration in favor of the right to housing, which will be held in Bilbao on December 14, under the motto “For the right to housing, let’s put an end to business!” . So far, more than 220 groups have shown their support for the mobilization.
At an event held today, they explained that they made this call with a clear intention: “to appeal to the root of the housing problem. Because as long as housing is a business, it will never be a right; or, in other cases, words: “As long as housing is a commodity, it will never apply to everyone.”
The unions believe that the housing problem in Euskal Herria is manifesting itself ‘in an increasingly crude and violent manner’. “Proof of this is the excessive increase in rents and mortgage prices; the increasingly fierce tourist processes, the evictions, the offensive by the judiciary, the media and the police against the occupation; the staggering increase in the number of homeless people; or the increase in the number of workers who rely on insufficient assistance to afford a roof,” they denounced.
But in the words of these unions: “What is for many a daily problem, for others is a business opportunity: vulture funds, banks, the tourism sector, public institutions and major investors are increasingly benefiting from the housing market.”
‘So it is very clear what the two sides of the coin are: the increase in the profits of the bourgeoisie means the increase in misery.
of the workers. That is to say, behind the wealth and property of a few lies the poverty and dispossession of the majority,” they have criticized.
Given the scale of the problem, the various housing associations in Euskal Herria wanted to call for a “broad” mobilization. And for that they launched a membership campaign a few weeks ago. Today they once again called to “take to the streets of Bilbao, in defense of the right to housing and against business.”
