Why was Brian Thompson executed in cold blood on the streets of New York? A manifesto found on his killer could provide information on the death of the insurance company boss…
Luigi Mangione, arrested in Pennsylvania, carried a letter expressing his anger at the health care system. The 26-year-old was charged with murder after his arrest. On Tuesday he refused to accept a transfer to New York.
“I was able to read this manifesto,” Detective Chief Detective Joseph Kenny of the New York Police Department told ABC. Mangione was frustrated with health care in the United States.
In his text, he pointed out that the US healthcare system is the most expensive in the world, but the US ranks only 42nd in life expectancy. “He has written a lot about his disdain for American corporations and the healthcare industry in particular,” Kenny said.
Mangione was arrested Monday in the city of Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a daylong manhunt and was subsequently charged with murder, possession of a firearm and possession of forged documents. The 26-year-old appeared in court in Blair County on Tuesday.
Grin-Killer fought back violently
TV images showed the 26-year-old being brought to court in handcuffs and orange prison clothing. There he refused a transfer to New York, prosecutor Peter Weeks announced. His lawyers now have two weeks to present arguments in favor of staying in Pennsylvania. As Mangione was led away by police officers, he resisted violently, shouting “dishonest” and “an insult to the intelligence of the American people.”
Police found a firearm and a silencer on him, “made possible with a 3D printer.” Mangione is strongly suspected of shooting dead the 50-year-old boss of health insurer United Healthcare on the street in New York last Wednesday.
Thompson has been at the helm of the company since 2021, one of the largest health insurers in the US with 440,000 employees and an annual turnover of 371 billion dollars (approximately 353 billion euros).
Killer is partly celebrated
His murder caused shock, but also led to a series of hateful comments online about US health insurers. The companies were accused of enriching themselves at the expense of patients.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro condemned the act. “You don’t kill someone in cold blood over political issues or to express your opinion,” the Democratic politician said. The White House also responded on Tuesday. “It is unacceptable that we use force to fight corporate greed,” White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said.
Mangione comes from a wealthy family
According to the New York Times, Mangione suffered from severe back pain and underwent surgery last year. A photo on one of his internet accounts showed an X-ray of what appeared to be an injured spine.
According to American media, Mangione is the son of a wealthy family from the Baltimore region that owns several country clubs. The family released a statement saying they were “shocked and devastated.” According to researchers, Mangione grew up in the US state of Maryland, attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he majored in engineering and was considered an excellent student. Police said Mangione’s last known address was in Honolulu, Hawaii.
