The alleged murderer of the head of United Healthcare in New York sees himself as a hero, according to police. He viewed the killing as a “symbolic blow and direct action against the company’s alleged corruption and power plays,” a report said.
Luigi M. (26) sees himself as a kind of martyr who has decided to finally take action against such injustice. In fact, the horror of the crime online quickly merged with many people’s concentrated anger against the American healthcare system and insurance industry. Both are strongly organized in the private sector: supply and demand play a central role, hospitals and insurance companies are largely not in public hands.
Many people in the US find the terrible drug prices, doctor’s fees and administrative costs unfair. According to a survey by the Gallup polling institute, 81 percent of respondents are dissatisfied with the costs of medical care.
Not a United Healthcare customer
The alleged killer was likely not a United Healthcare customer. He had a handwritten “manifesto” with him when he was arrested on Monday. “He said it is the fifth largest company in America, which in turn makes it the largest healthcare provider in America. That’s probably why he chose the company,” said lead researcher Joseph Kenny.
As reported, CEO Brian Thompson was shot near Manhattan’s busy Times Square on December 4. He was taken to a hospital, but died from his injuries. Five days after the fatal shots, Luigi M. was spotted in a fast food restaurant in the US state of Pennsylvania and arrested. He has now been charged with murder.
