Shots were fired at the campus of a Philippine university near the capital on Sunday, killing three people. Among the dead is a former mayor, so the assassination attempt is believed to have targeted the politician who was murdered. A suspect has been arrested.
Former Lamitan mayor Rose Furigay attended law school graduation at Ateneo De Manila University in Quezon city, where her daughter studied. An aide to Furigay was fatally shot, as was a 35-year-old university guard. The daughter of the former mayor was shot in the attack and taken to hospital.
After the shots were fired, the suspect climbed over a wall and broke through a gate in his getaway car. After a chase, the police managed to get hold of the suspected perpetrator. The university subsequently canceled the celebrations and announced it was working closely with police in the investigation.
