They wreaked havoc in Vienna for years, and now the infamous battering ram gang is behind bars. The perpetrator group operating from Serbia was responsible for nine burglaries in shops, with a total damage of 1.8 million euros. The criminals sold their loot online.
The criminals have had two years of painstaking investigation behind them, but the work has paid off! No fewer than nine, some spectacular, coups were committed by the Serbian gang. The perpetrators always followed the same pattern: after arriving in the federal capital, they first spied on their targets for a while, then stole cars near the crime scene and used them as battering rams or getaway vehicles.
The burglaries themselves then took place in no time: the Serbs cleared the shops within a maximum of two minutes and left immediately. Some victims were visited several times, such as a store for expensive cameras in Neubau and a luxury boutique in the city. However, the gang did most of its work at a jeweler in Brigittenau, where they obtained loot worth 150,000 euros in one fell swoop. It would be their last coup…
International cooperation
The research was difficult at first, but over time the puzzle came together. The trail led to Serbia, where the authorities there actively helped track down the perpetrators. After a long period of observation, this happened almost red-handed.
State and Federal Criminal Police officers tracked down the troops in Vienna again and with the help of the special Cobra unit, the handcuffs clicked on three men – just a few days before they planned to stage their tenth coup.
Quartet already convicted
A fourth perpetrator was arrested when he fled at the Fügen border crossing in Styria. Two other suspects are still wanted. Four men, including the 48-year-old main perpetrator, have now been sentenced to prison terms of twenty months to six and a half years.
