In a defamation lawsuit, the lawyers of the future American president and television network ABC have reached a settlement. This provides Donald Trump with a real windfall.
The broadcaster has agreed to a payment of 15 million dollars (about 14.2 million euros). The money would go to a charitable presidential foundation and a Trump museum and the legal dispute would be settled accordingly, according to a relevant court document. The compensation must be accompanied by a public expression of regret for the error.
ABC will also pay Trump $1 million in legal fees. The Republican had sued the channel and presenter George Stephanopoulos for defamation.
The moderator talked about a rape conviction
Stephanopoulos said in an interview with Republican Rep. Nancy Mace in March that Trump had been civilly convicted of raping American author E. Jean Carroll. In 2023, a New York jury even found it proven that Trump had assaulted, sexually assaulted and later defamed Carroll in a luxury New York department store in 1996. The rape charge was dismissed.
