Tears of relief and a historic verdict in the US: Kristin Lobato, who spent 15 years innocently in prison, received compensation worth the equivalent of 32 million euros. The 41-year-old was the victim of false evidence and widespread injustice.
The woman was questioned by police in 2001 at the age of 18, without a lawyer present. She was accused of the brutal murder of Duran Bailey, a homeless man. Bailey’s body was found near a dumpster in Las Vegas with his throat slit, skull crushed and genitals severed.
The prosecution was based on an alleged prison statement in which Lobato allegedly confessed to killing a man during a three-day drug binge. However, there was no physical evidence or witnesses; police officers are alleged to have knowingly falsified evidence. The two retired officials announced a possible appeal.
Lobato, whose alibi was upheld by the Supreme Court, tearfully embraced her lawyers after the damages verdict was announced. “It’s been a bumpy road with a lot of obstacles,” she said. “I’m glad it’s finally over.”
