Thaw and then peel – the heat returns, just in time for Christmas Eve. Where it can still be white.
Christmas Eve – and thick snowflakes transform everything outside into a winter wonderland. These are scenes that have only been seen in cheesy films for the past twenty years. According to experts from the private weather service Ubimet, the almost traditional Christmas thaw will certainly come again this year. A few flakes or centimeters of snow may fall from the sky here and there on Monday with a cold front that will drop temperatures again over the weekend. But the various models all show milder temperatures for December 24.
In the south and east (see graph above), a white Christmas seems almost impossible. Snow may most likely remain at higher altitudes in Vorarlberg, in the Kitzbühel Alps, Pinzgau and Pongau and in Upper Styria. No surprise to meteorologists: Long-term series of measurements have shown that the second half of December has been unusually warm in most years since measurements began.
There is also no cold wave in sight on New Year’s Eve
From the current perspective, it should remain that way. According to the experts, there are no signs of snow or cold around the turn of the year.
