Pesticides and a lot of hidden sugar – that’s what consumer advocates from the Upper Austrian Labor Chamber (AK) complained about after a fruit muesli test. 14 products from popular retail chains were examined. Pesticides were found in four of them, and in the opinion of the AK, just as many contained too much sugar.
Five different pesticides were found in one package, and in another package a pesticide that was banned in the EU and potentially harmful to health. This was chlorfenapyr, for which, according to the AK, carcinogenic and reproductive harm exists and is considered toxic to bees and very toxic to aquatic organisms. However, in all cases the loads were well below the permitted limits. The organic mueslis were completely pesticide-free.
Up to a third of muesli consists of sugar
Another point of criticism concerned sugar, which made up a third of some of the grains tested. Even though the sweetness comes from the dried fruit: “For the body, sugar remains sugar,” consumer advocates criticize. For the four products with the highest sugar content in the test, an adult with a 50 gram portion had already consumed more than half of the daily amount of sugar classified by the WHO as harmless to health.
The price of the mueslis was between 1.23 and 6.70 euros for 500 grams. The good news: The price was not an indicator of the number of pesticides found in the test, according to consumer interests.
