The US is optimistic: according to insiders, a ceasefire in Gaza is imminent

Date:

According to insiders, an agreement on a ceasefire for the Gaza Strip could be reached in the coming days. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is already on his way to the Egyptian capital Cairo to take part in the talks.

Several insiders confirmed this to Reuters on Tuesday. Netanyahu’s spokesman Omer Dostri immediately denied on X that the Israeli prime minister was in Cairo.

An Egyptian source also denied media reports that Netanyahu would visit Cairo, Egypt’s state news agency Al-Ahram reported.

Shortly before, Egyptian state broadcaster Al-Kahera reported that “comprehensive” efforts had been made by Egypt and Qatar with all parties to reach a ceasefire.

Optimism from Washington
However, the US assumes that the conflict parties in the Middle East are getting closer to a ceasefire. “We believe – and the Israelis have said this – that we are getting closer to this point,” US presidential spokesman John Kirby told Fox News. “No doubt we believe that too.” However, despite all the optimism, we must be cautious, Kirby says. “We’ve been in this situation before where we didn’t finish.” Kirby did not respond when asked whether Netanyahu traveled to Cairo.

Egypt, Qatar and the US have been trying for months to broker a ceasefire between Israel and the radical Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army responded to their attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023 with a large-scale offensive. Since then, more than 45,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian figures. According to Israeli figures, 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s attack on Israel. 250 people were kidnapped as hostages in the Gaza Strip.
