Authorities say the previously mysterious ‘Disease X’ in a remote region of the Democratic Republic of Congo is a serious form of malaria.
“The mystery has finally been solved,” the Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday. This is serious malaria in the form of a respiratory disease. The malnutrition of those affected also plays a role. Children under the age of five are particularly affected.
There have been more than 400 cases of the disease since the outbreak emerged in Kwango province in November. 143 people were killed.
Operations are difficult
The fear of a possible new disease was therefore great. The government of Congo had announced that it was on high alert. The region’s remoteness also makes on-the-ground operations more difficult, said Mike Ryan, WHO’s director of emergency response.
From the capital Kinshasa it takes more than two days to even reach the area due to poor roads and weather conditions.
The term ‘Disease Symptoms include fever, headache, breathing problems and anemia.
In anemia, also called anemia, the concentration of the red blood pigment hemoglobin in the blood falls below normal. This means that the blood can transport significantly less oxygen.
