A look behind the scenes – Krampus Runs: “Organization is challenging”

Date:

Injured runners, visitors and even police officers: this year’s Krampus season made headlines. Before the final, the “Krone” supervised one of the last events of the year in Nötsch im Gailtal.

There are already many wild activities before the Krampus Run at the Nötsch town hall: While the hard-working members and helpers of Dorfteufel St. Magdalen carry and precisely place countless barriers and fire pits, the other helpers take care of the food and power supply. One hour before the start of the event there will be a safety meeting with the chairmen of the participant groups.

“Most importantly, safety is the top priority – that of the visitors, but especially that of the Krampus. You know what happened this year,” warns organizer and club president Fabio Trezza, who explains the rules in detail to the running groups. For example, leaving the running bowl, i.e. the cordoned off area, is strictly prohibited.

The injured Krampus makes his comeback
“Beating visitors above the belt line is also prohibited. If there are any violations, the run for the group is immediately over – but this also applies to spectators who misbehave,” said the club boss, who happily announced that the colleague who was seriously injured by a spectator in Moosburg at the beginning of December was there whatever was, is back again.

The stewards stationed along the barriers keep an eye on everything – and, equipped with fire extinguishers, they also keep a close eye on the hot shows of the “demons”. In the end it was a spectacular spectacle – without incident. Unlike many Carinthian chairman colleagues who threw in the towel after this year’s incidents and no longer want to organize a run next year, Fabio Trezza and his St. Magdalener Dorfteufel will again cause hellish activity in Nötsch in 2025.

“We want to continue the habit”
“Even though it takes us all a lot of time and is quite an effort, we want to keep the habits going. And when you get such positive feedback from clubs, visitors and the community, you are happy and extremely motivated.”
