They break into, steal cars, rob – the number of complaints against minors has doubled.
“Everything was better in the past” – the criticism that children and young people have been hearing from their grandparents or parents for generations seems to be confirmed by alarming figures. Austria has a real problem, especially in the group of so-called perpetrators who are under the age of criminal responsibility. And the rule of law is virtually powerless. Even ten-year-olds don’t leave the house without a knife. When they appear in court for the first time at the age of 14, the record holders among ‘young criminals’ have often already amassed 100 crimes or more.
Every day, thirty reports are filed against criminal minors
With almost 11,000 reports in 2023 – an average of 30 per day (!) – the number of crimes in this age group has more than doubled within ten years. As Viennese police chief Gerhard Pürstl confirmed in the krone.tv interview (see video above). The current topic is also hotly debated in the justice group during Zuckerl’s exploratory negotiations. The ÖVP’s demand to lower the punishment age to twelve years is up for debate – or whether parents should be made more responsible through ‘police instruction on rules’ during the inspection.
Children in daycare are allowed to be outside all night
However, in order to be able to stop future criminal careers at an early stage, no special youth detention centers exist. In addition, there is the cumbersome-sounding residence law. This affects many very young intensive care offenders who are housed in supported living groups and are no longer at home. There is no recourse against them when it comes to restricting freedom of movement. Simply put, a ten-year-old can be out hunting all night without the caretakers being able to do anything about it
