Two people were injured in a fire at a nuclear research center in Poland.
The fire at the National Center for Atomic Research in Otwock near Warsaw has now been extinguished and there is no danger from radioactive radiation, a spokesperson for the local fire brigade told TVN24. The fire broke out in an administration building, a spokeswoman for the research center reported to the PAP news agency.
Because these buildings are far away from the research reactor, it was not at risk from the fire. According to the fire brigade, 32 people were brought to safety from the administration building. Two of them were taken to hospital with burns to their faces and hands.
The only nuclear research reactor in the country
The National Center for Atomic Research is one of the largest research institutes in Poland and has the country’s only nuclear research reactor. Poland currently has no nuclear power plants to generate energy. However, the country plans to switch to nuclear energy on a large scale. Construction of the first reactor block is expected to begin in Slajszewo, northwest of Gdansk, by 2026. The nuclear power plant must be operational in 2033.
