“I am very cold” – Sick Pope cancels Advent sermon

Date:

Despite health problems, the 88-year-old Pope Francis is preparing for a busy Christmas program. But now the Pope had to cancel an appointment.

It is said that the reason for the absence of the head of the Catholic Church was a cold. During an audience in the Vatican he declared: “I am very cold.” Nevertheless, Francis attended two more appointments. According to the Italian news agency Ansa, the pope appeared short of breath and had difficulty speaking.

Concern for the Pope’s health
The Argentinian, who recently celebrated his birthday, has been struggling with health problems for a long time and is dependent on a wheelchair. A few days ago he suffered a bruise on his chin after bumping into his bedside table. Francis has also been struck by colds several times in recent winters.

Close program for Christmas
Despite his health limitations, the Pope has big tasks ahead of him this Christmas. On Christmas Eve he will lead Christmas Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica and at the same time open the Holy Door for the Jubilee Year 2025. Such Holy Years only occur once every 25 years. On Christmas Day, the traditional blessing “Urbi et Orbi” will follow, which Francis will address to the faithful in St. Peter’s Square and around the world.

Pope Francis, who has been in power since 2013, is one of the oldest popes in history. At 88 years old, he is approaching the age of Leo XIII, who died at the age of 93, the oldest pope. His predecessor Benedict XVI, who died in 2022 at the age of 95, had already resigned from the papacy in 2013.
