The German newspaper ‘Bild’ reports this, citing police sources. The driver of the car was arrested and police are investigating the case as a terrorist attack.
Four people have already been killed in the accident at a Christmas market in Magdeburg (Germany) and the number of injured has risen to more than 150, of whom 86 are seriously injured.
Police have arrested the perpetrator of the attack, a Saudi doctor who has lived in the country since 2006, and are investigating the incident as a terrorist attack.
At least one minor is among the fatalities. The Prime Minister of Saxony Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff, briefed the media at the scene of the tragedy.
Tamara Zieschang, the Interior Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, assured that the Saudis acted alone and lived in Bernburg, about 50 kilometers from Magdeburg.
Shortly after 7 p.m., the man drove into the crowd and drove a distance of at least 400 meters through the Christmas market in a rental car with Munich license plates.
The event comes almost exactly eight years after an attack on a Christmas market in central Berlin on December 19, 2016, in which thirteen people were killed after being run over by a truck. The perpetrator of the attack fled to Italy, where he was killed by police.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed concern about what happened: “The reports from Magdeburg suggest something bad. My thoughts are with the victims and their families,” he wrote on platform X.
