Authorities in Guatemala removed at least 160 minors from the complex of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect on Friday and brought them to safety. The Minister of the Interior, Francisco Jiménez, announced this after a large-scale police operation.
Members of the Lev Tahor sect are accused of forced marriage, child abuse and rape in the Central American country. According to the attorney general’s office, police searched the group’s compound in the rural municipality of Oratorio, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Guatemala’s capital.
Remains of a child found
The authorities announced on the online platform X (formerly Twitter) that the remains of a child had been found there. Computers and other electronic devices were seized.
Child abuse report
In November, child abuse was reported to the sect in Guatemala. In recent years they have also been studied in the US and Mexico. Arrests were made in both countries in 2019 for child abduction.
