Snow amounts between 50 and 100 centimeters are expected in Tyrol in the coming days. Geosphere Austria issued a snow warning of the second highest level (orange) for the western regions of the state on Saturday afternoon. The avalanche situation could become vulnerable.
The snow warning applies from Sunday to Wednesday, December 25. Specifically affected are the Oberlechtal, the Arlberg region, the Verwall and the rear Paznaun Valley in the Landeck and Reutte districts, the report said. Snow amounts between 50 and 100 centimeters are expected there. The avalanche situation is likely tense.
Stormy wind and rain
On Sunday it will initially rain in western Tyrol with stormy winds, but on Monday the precipitation will probably change to snow, even at low altitude. “The latest forecasts show that heavy snowfall will start in the valley areas, especially on Monday and Tuesday,” said Elmar Rizzoli, head of the Tyrolean Center for Crisis and Disaster Management.
State Councilor Astrid Mair (ÖVP), responsible for safety, called on people with ice cream to take the weather situation into account when planning their trip and to inform themselves about the route before leaving by car.
Expect high avalanche danger
In the Tyrolean mountains, the avalanche danger is expected to rise to danger level 4 (high) on a five-part scale in the coming days due to the large amount of fresh snow and stormy winds. A lot of new and distorted snow will be deposited on the often thin snow cover, says Matthias Walcher of the avalanche warning service of the state of Tyrol.
“A weak snow layer and in some places up to a meter of fresh snow are the perfect ingredients for a tense avalanche situation,” said the expert. Slab avalanches are easy to trigger in many places, and spontaneous avalanches can also be expected in the coming days, Walcher said.
