Magdeburg striker Taleb A. worked as a specialist in, of all places, a psychiatric hospital in the penal system. There he cared for people suffering from addiction. His colleagues there are said to have repeatedly doubted his competence – and derisively nicknamed him ‘Dr. Google” missed.
Even days after a nine-year-old child and four women were killed in the attack on Magdeburg’s Christmas market, the perpetrator’s motive is still unknown. However, numerous experts emphasize that the man from Saudi Arabia does not fit a common pattern for such acts.
Patients also distrusted the specialist
In the meantime, more and more details about the man are leaking to the public. After attracting attention through repeated threats of criminal offences, a report in the “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung” now raises doubts about the doctor’s professional competence.
“Our name is ‘Dr. Google,” the newspaper quotes a psychiatric employee. Where does this mocking name come from? A. would have done research via the well-known search engine before making a diagnosis. Not only the staff, but also the 50-year-old’s patients had been suspicious of him for a long time.
In addition, the alleged perpetrator is said to have been quite a loner, he “avoided conversations with his colleagues as much as possible” – he is said to have explicitly rejected possible support from them.
“Alcohol is good, honey is bad”
Some patients even refused to be treated by him, also because there were misunderstandings in the diagnoses – even after twenty years in Germany he had problems with the language.
A. was responsible for coordinating the therapy of addicted criminals. When asked how to get rid of their addiction quickly, he would always have said something like: “Alcohol is good, honey is bad.” He is said to have distributed tranquilizer pills to addicts when this was not necessary.
Prescribed life-threatening medications
But he was not only perceived negatively in prison, according to the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung. That is why he was no longer allowed to practice in the adjacent specialized Salus clinic, because he allegedly prescribed medications several times that could have been life-threatening for the patients. The sisters there noticed this and were able to prevent it from being taken, potentially saving lives.
“There were constant complaints to other doctors and superiors about Taleb A.”, the newspaper quoted a former nurse. But there would never have been any consequences. Due to vacation and illness, he has been off duty since October 2024.
Confused internet presence
In addition to his work as a doctor, Taleb A. was an activist and fierce critic of Islam – especially on social networks, where more than 40,000 people followed him before the attack, where he also regularly shared AfD content.
On Friday evening he finally raced through the crowds in a rental car in the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt. The 50-year-old was arrested immediately after the crime.
