174 skiers and snowboarders were stuck in a cable car in Colorado on Saturday due to a technical fault. Winter sports enthusiasts sometimes had to stay in the gondolas for hours.
Officials on Sunday were investigating the cause of the crack, which required the evacuation of more than 170 stranded skiers and snowboarders.
The cable car at the Winter Park Resort, more than 100 kilometers west of Denver, was stopped after the defect was discovered in a part, a spokeswoman for the resort told American media.
Skiers got off lightly
Those in the gondolas were lowered on ropes over a period of about five hours, she said. No injuries were reported during the rescue operations, which took place at the start of the busy ski season.
The rescuers climbed into the gondolas from above and lowered the equipment to rescue the passengers. They were then absorbed to the slope below using a rope and a chair.
The defect in the cable car has now been repaired. Workers have already been able to replace the defective part. State regulators and the lift’s manufacturer are now investigating the cause of the crack. The ski area also has 21 other lifts in use.
