Christmas Eve Shift – Worked Christmas for seven years

Date:

On December 24, most people spend a quiet, contemplative Christmas Eve, but there are those who choose a different path on this day. Hannes Grabner, paramedic, is one of them.

While the lights of the Christmas trees shine in the windows of the houses, Hannes Grabner sits in the Red Cross office in Klagenfurt. The 26-year-old from Friesacher has served for seven years on December 24. “At Christmas we are a very young team that is active from the ambulance to the emergency vehicle, so that the other colleagues can celebrate with their families and children.”

No major tragedies occurred
Christmas – a time for reflection, but unfortunately emergencies have no holidays. “Most of our missions are due to illness. In an emergency, it doesn’t matter whether it is October 3 or December 24, a heart attack can unfortunately always occur,” reports the stress-resistant paramedic. Fortunately, Grabner has not experienced any particularly bad missions on Christmas Eve in the past seven years: “It is always tragic when a family member has to go to the hospital on Christmas, but fortunately no major tragedies have occurred.”
