Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has erupted again

Date:

Lava fountains up to 80 meters high leave no doubt: Kilauea is very active and has erupted again.

One of the most active volcanoes in the world is spewing lava again: according to American seismologists, Kilauea on the Big Island of Hawaii erupted on Monday.

As the responsible authority USGS announced, the eruption started shortly after 2 a.m. (local time, 1 p.m. CEST) in the southwestern part of the volcanic depression, caused by volcanic activity.

Photos showed huge fissures spewing lava (see images above).

“At 4:30 a.m., lava fountains up to 250 feet high were observed,” the USGS said. Volcanic smog will also form, the so-called Vog.

Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and a popular tourist destination. Kilauea has erupted regularly since the 1950s.

In 2014, the Big Island declared a state of emergency because lava from Kilauea threatened the entire town of Pahoa on the eastern tip of the island.
