The sometimes enormous amounts of fresh snow are causing alarm bells to ring at the avalanche warning services in western Austria. In some regions of Tyrol and Vorarlberg a warning level of 4 out of 5 applies. Outside the secured slopes, extra caution is required at Christmas!
“Great avalanche danger. Conditions off the slopes are dangerous,” Tyrol’s avalanche warning service warns on its website. In the Tyrolean Oberland, danger level 4 applies above the tree line, for example in the Allgäu Alps and the western Lechtal Alps. The large amount of fresh snow and extensive snowbanks are very sensitive to disturbance.
Restraint in open spaces
As precipitation decreases from Tuesday afternoon, the avalanche danger will gradually decrease again, but the snow cover will have weak layers. “With the low temperatures, the snow cover can hardly settle. Guided tours require caution and restraint,” the experts further emphasize.
In other parts of Tyrol, avalanche warning level 3 was in force above the tree line on Tuesday – significant danger.
Critical situation also in Vorarlberg
A high avalanche danger of level 4 on the five-level scale still existed in parts of Vorarlberg on Tuesday. The Lechquelle Mountains above 2000 meters above sea level were affected.
