An eight-year-old boy shot a one-year-old girl with his father’s gun and injured another toddler in the US state of Florida. The father had left his gun in a hotel room, where the boy found it, played with it, and then accidentally fired a shot, as Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said Tuesday night.
The shot first hit the one-year-old girl, then the bullet wounded another two-year-old. The girls’ mother was the gun owner’s girlfriend, a multiple felon, Simmons explained at a news conference.
Daddy wanted to hide the gun
After Sunday’s incident, the 45-year-old father returned to the hotel room in Pensacola and tried to hide the weapon and drugs, according to investigators. He is now charged with possession of weapons as a convicted criminal, obstruction of the investigation, culpable negligence and improper storage of a weapon.
“What we have here is a 14-time thug who has a gun with his girlfriend at a local motel. He leaves the gun, but doesn’t secure it properly, so his eight-year-old son can pick up the gun and fire it. He kills a one-year-old and injures a two-year-old,” Simmons said.

The two-year-old was not seriously injured, the sheriff in charge explained. Her twin sister, who was also in the hotel room, was unharmed.
