Two sailors are missing after a Russian cargo ship sank off Spain’s Mediterranean coast. 14 members of the 16-man crew of the ship “Ursa Major” were rescued about 40 nautical miles off the coast of Cartagena on Monday evening.
The Russian cargo ship ‘Ursa Major’ sank in international waters in the Mediterranean Sea after an explosion in the engine room. This was confirmed by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Ship part of the Shadow Fleet
According to media reports, the 142-meter cargo ship was a supply ship for troops in Syria. The ship is said to be part of the so-called shadow fleet that Russia maintains for its oil and gas supplies to avoid sanctions.
Probably different freight than officially stated
“The Russian cargo ship that sank off the Spanish coast yesterday belonged 100 percent to the Russian Ministry of Defense and was probably carrying more nefarious goods than the said cargo,” writes the Kyiv Insider on X (see post above).
According to Spanish media reports, the explosion occurred around noon on Monday between the port city of Águilas in southeastern Spain and Oran, Algeria.
The cause of the explosion is currently unknown
The Red Cross in Spain mobilized a team of doctors and psychosocial support specialists to care for the rescued and also organized emergency shelter. The cause of the accident was not initially disclosed.
The Spanish rescue ship “Clara Campoamor” and a Spanish Navy patrol boat remained at the accident site until further notice, also to observe whether fuel was leaking from the 15-year-old cargo ship.
