Christmas child and New Year’s baby: the maternity ward of the Salzburg State Hospital is busy even at the quietest time of the year.
It should work out for little Mila. The little one, who was born just a few days ago, will spend her first Christmas in her new home in Flachgau. Mom Nina and dad Christoph are happy with their first Christmas as a family.
“Everyone wants to get home with their new happiness before Christmas,” says Christiane Radler (27). However, she and Michaela Trau (52) are on duty on Christmas Eve. The two qualified nurses ensure the well-being of the baby and mother in the maternity ward of the University Hospital of Salzburg.
“We have 24-hour access”
The cyclist from Pongau has no problem working at Christmas. She prefers to spend the new year with family and friends. The same applies to colleague Michaela. Her three sons are already adults. The festival is important, the status is different. The service on December 24 in the postpartum ward is more contemplative than usual. “But a baby can be born at any time. We have recordings 24 hours a day,” says Christiane Radler.
After the delivery room, each new family continues to their ward. “We are currently almost full with 40 newborns,” adds a colleague sadly. Up to and including New Year’s Eve, the number of births is actually slightly higher than normal every year. So the quietest time in the hospital is a hectic time? “Yes, but we don’t care, we are always there. All year round.”
