In Syria, all armed rebel factions must be disbanded and brought together under the umbrella of the Ministry of Defense. The leaders of the individual groups agreed to this after meeting with Syria’s de facto ruler, Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Al-Sharaa had previously announced that he would not allow weapons outside the control of the state to be present in the country. The agreement was announced on Tuesday evening by the new interim government.
Longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad was overthrown on December 8 by a rebel alliance led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The protests that broke out in 2011 and eventually culminated in a civil war with international involvement have deeply divided the country.
After the fall of Assad, there are still some heavy fighting, especially in northern Syria, between Kurdish militias, who are fighting with the US against the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS), and Turkish-backed forces.
Christmas tree set on fire causes outrage
Meanwhile, a torched Christmas tree in a town in western Syria is causing outrage. According to eyewitnesses, hundreds of people demonstrated against crime in the capital Damascus and other cities on Monday evening. They called for national unity in Syria, as the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. Christians and Muslims took to the streets together, participant Samer Elias from Damascus told the German news agency. “Everyone called for the protection of Christians.”
On Monday evening, unknown people set fire to the Christmas tree in Al-Suqaylabiyah in Hama province. One person was arrested, local security authorities said. The tree needs to be improved again. It was emphasized that no insult to any part of the Syrian people will be tolerated.
