Works Council warns: – ‘Innsbruck rescue service is about to collapse’

Date:

The works council of the Red Cross Innsbruck sounds the alarm and warns in a letter about a “dangerous situation for the emergency services in the wider area of Innsbruck”. So the system collapses. In addition, “the quality of the supply has been gone for years and the security of supply is now also in acute danger”.

However, the cause is not the pandemic, but “the fact that the emergency service in Tyrol has not changed the system for eleven years and, despite the number of operations increasing every year, the available resources – ie rescue vehicles – have never been sufficiently adapted”. as Daniel Loner and Stefan Wehinger criticize.

Already in 2019 – so before Corona – the system was “on the limit”, meanwhile before the “collapse”.

Increasing pressure and workload
But the reason is not just the resources. Eenling and Wehinger: “Just like in nursing, the pressure and workload for full-time paramedics is increasing. This has already led to the layoff of long-term, highly experienced colleagues. They protect themselves and their own health with the last resort at their disposal – to get out of the sick system.”

That is why in the city of Innsbruck and the surrounding area during the day – ie between 6 am and 10 pm – “a complete overload of the ambulances has been the norm for months”.

responsibility in the country
But that’s not all: “In the Inntal axis too, patient transport has been used extensively for years. In particular, the medical head of the rescue service – who monitors and monitors rescue and patient transport on behalf of the Land of Tyrol – states unequivocally in the 2021 annual report that the system already until capacity is used or overloaded,” said Loner. and Wehinger.

For example, the rescue service should never be busy for long. “Here people are knowingly playing with people’s health and lives.”

Finally, the two works councils clearly see the responsibility with the customer – namely the State of Tyrol: “There is an urgent need for intervention and, above all, rapid measures to ensure the safety of the people in Tyrol.”
