What an eventful night for many Styrian firefighters: 90 fire brigades had to be called up for a good 140 storm operations and hail protection was also required. Drama in precious scrap: A flash set a family home on fire, the residents were able to save themselves.
A storm front passed over Styria on Tuesday night, hail, lightning and heavy rain led to 140 deployment of the fire brigade. The main task consisted of pumping out work, removing trees and clearing traffic routes. Over the course of the night, the heavy rain turned into normal precipitation, which did not stop until the morning.
The Styrian hail defenses were also completely challenged. Four planes were in the air, reports boss Josef Mündler. “It was extremely turbulent to fly because of the high wind shear.” Unfortunately, Mündler expects a “bad summer of storms”.
The couple managed to save themselves from the fire
It was most dramatic in Edelschrott in the Voitsberg district: there, around 6.30 pm during a thunderstorm, lightning struck the roof construction of the parental home. The couple (51 and 49 years old) were in the house at the time and the fire immediately spread to the entire top floor. At the same time, another source of fire started in the bedroom on the ground floor due to an overvoltage or an electrical defect in a socket.
The couple managed to escape and called the fire brigade. Three fire brigades – Köflach, St. Martin and Edelschrott – with 25 men extinguished the flames by midnight. The house became uninhabitable and the couple stayed with relatives temporarily.
Outlook promises fewer storms
Tuesday should calm down again, although showers are possible again in the afternoon. Wednesday should be completely hassle free. From today’s perspective, Thursday and Friday will be more unstable again, but according to Hatvan, the storms should not reach Monday’s intensity.
