Early Wednesday morning, the ground opened unexpectedly on a Naples street: a significant hole appeared in the ground, swallowing two cars and a tree – one of the vehicles even while driving. An adjacent residential building had to be evacuated.
The dramatic incident took place around 5 a.m. in the Vomero neighborhood – on one of the corners that is one of the busiest in Naples, even early in the morning. At that moment, a car drove by with two young people on board – although they and their vehicle were swallowed by the hole in the ground and fell into the depths, the two escaped virtually unscathed.
Water leakage created a risky situation
“It’s a miracle, it could have been much worse,” said one of the passengers, who survived the accident with only a few scratches. “A pipe was broken, we could have been flooded by the water,” the affected person told TV channel Sky TG24. With the help of three soldiers and a passerby, the young men were finally freed from their predicament. The helpers climbed into the hole in the ground and pulled the victims from the wreckage.
“The first checks show that the sewer has collapsed,” the municipality said after the incident. The ground floor of a neighboring building was flooded and the house was eventually evacuated. The water supply in the area had to be turned off. A school near the sinkhole was closed as a precaution.
An investigation was launched to find out what caused the sinkhole to form. The Neapolitan public prosecutor’s office opens proceedings against the incident.
