Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government has been trying for years to erase the symbols of British colonial rule from India’s history books and institutions. Now even the country name could be changed.
An English-language invitation to an official dinner at the upcoming G20 summit in New Delhi called the host, President Draupadi Murmu, “President of Bharat” instead of “President of India,” local media reported. ‘Bharat’ is an old Sanskrit word for ‘India’, used interchangeably in the country, as in the constitution.
The current country name is “Symbol of Slavery”
Some radical Hindus in the country are bothered by the name of the country ‘India’. They claim it was introduced by the British colonists and is therefore a symbol of slavery. Only recently, the head of the Hindu nationalist organization RSS, which is close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling BJP party, demanded that the name of the country be changed from ‘India’ to ‘Bharat’.
However, opposition politicians questioned its use. The name India is recognized internationally and has become a brand, the report said. Several opposition parties had recently formed a coalition called INDIA (short for Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) to position themselves against the ruling party. Modi has been Prime Minister of India since 2014. A new parliament will be elected in the spring of 2024. Modi is expected to seek re-election.
