Chair remained empty – Nehammer moved climate petition at breakfast

Date:

In an action as part of the ‘Restart’ petition, the breakfast table was set – but the most important spot remained empty…

All attempts by the initiators of the petition “Restart for a crisis-proof Austria” to contact Chancellor Karl Nehammer for a joint conversation were unsuccessful. That is why the environmental organizations Global 2000, WWF, the climate referendum and former Minister of Health Rudolf Anschober invited the head of government for breakfast yesterday – right in front of the Federal Chancellery.

The representatives of the organizations, climate scientists and other sympathizers sat down at the long table of Heurigentafels. However, one remained free because the head of government did not appear. It was not clear to the participants why Nehammer continued to ignore the questions of the initiative, which was co-founded by the “Krone”.

“The Chancellor is confident of the government’s past successes. We have a summer full of environmental disasters, but it’s not about science,” says climate expert Daniel Huppmann of Scientists for Future. “There has been 50 years of evidence calling for policy action. But that is not heard in Austria,” says economist Sigrid Stagl. “There are currently many excuses. The government must come up with a plan on how to achieve the climate goals in 2040,” the expert explains.

“We expect Nehammer to stop ignoring us,” says Viktoria Auer of Global 2000. She hopes the move will increase pressure on the head of government. “The Chancellor must finally live up to his responsibility for Austria,” exclaimed Thomas Zehetner of WWF Austria.
