On January 26, 2025, the political cards will be shuffled again in most municipalities in Lower Austria. But new rules also apply. Second homes are not eligible to vote this time.
Parties and citizen lists still have less than a month to nominate their candidates for the municipal elections. The election proposals must be received at the town hall no later than December 6 at noon.
Five communities do not vote
In 568 of the 573 municipalities in Lower Austria, local parliaments will be re-elected on January 26 next year. The statutory cities of St. Pölten, Krems and Waidhofen an der Ybbs traditionally vote on their representatives on their own dates. And in Pernersdorf and Vösendorf there were only new elections this year – citizens there will (probably) not be called on to vote locally again until 2023.
Primary residence is crucial
There are two important innovations for the January elections: on the one hand, the so-called unofficial ballots, which had repeatedly caused discrepancies in the past, have had their day. And on the other hand, fewer and fewer people are eligible to vote. Only about 1.3 million ‘real’ citizens of the country are allowed to vote on the official ballot – because this time the polling stations are taboo for second homes.
