Five journalists from a Palestinian television station are said to have been killed in an Israeli attack in the central Gaza Strip. They were said to be in a van parked in front of Al-Awda Hospital. A reporter’s wife was in labor there.
Photos showed a burned-out car with the words “Press” written on it. The Al-Quds Today channel, for which the journalists worked, also stated that the vehicle was clearly marked when it was attacked. According to Palestinian information, it was an outside van.
The woman was in labor during the attack
As the BBC reported, among others, a journalist’s wife was in labor in the hospital while he waited for her with colleagues. It is said that it was the couple’s first child.
In a message, the Israeli army said it had killed terrorists “posing as journalists”:
However, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said it had targeted “Islamic Jihad activists disguised as journalists” to prevent them from endangering the civilian population. It involved a targeted attack on the vehicle. The bodies of the victims were recovered after the incident and the fire was extinguished.

Reporters Without Borders: “Unprecedented massacre”
At the beginning of December, the organization Reporters Without Borders reported that more than 145 journalists in Gaza had been killed by the Israeli army since the start of the war in October 2023. The NGO described the high number of deaths as an “unprecedented massacre”.
An estimate from the Committee to Protect Journalists puts the number at a similar level and even before the current incident called for Israel to be held accountable for its attacks on the media. The Palestinian Association of Journalists reported an even higher death toll last week, saying more than 190 journalists have been killed and at least 400 injured since the war began.
