Zelenskyi took stock: This is how Russia terrorized Ukraine this week

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi took stock of the Russian attacks on his country over the past seven days. “In total, Russia used more than 370 attack drones, about 280 guided glide bombs and 80 missiles of various types against Ukraine this week,” Zelensky wrote on Facebook.

“Even on Christmas night, the terrorists carried out a massive airstrike,” Zelensky pointed out.

Heavy fighting in Ukraine and near Kursk
Parts of the western Russian Kursk region occupied by Ukrainian forces were again the scene of heavy fighting on Sunday. A total of 35 Russian attacks took place there during the day, as the General Staff in Kiev announced in its evening situation report. The attacks were massively supported by artillery. No information was given about the exact course of the front, nor were there any further details about its location.

Ukrainian troops took control of this area from Russia in a surprise attack in the summer. The Russian army has been trying to recapture these regions for weeks. Of the approximately 50,000 soldiers deployed by Moscow, approximately 10,000 fighters come from North Korea. According to Ukrainian armed forces and Western observers, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s forces have recently suffered heavy casualties.

Also fight in the East
Heavy fighting continues to rage in eastern Ukraine. The Pokrovsk region on the edge of the Donbass was in the crosshairs of Russian forces, which attacked Ukrainian defense lines there 26 times during the day with the support of artillery and fighter planes. Generals in Kiev said the attacks had been repulsed. The reports from the combat zones could not be independently verified.

The Russian attacks were mainly aimed at objects of the Ukrainian energy infrastructure. In addition, residential buildings were attacked and damaged seemingly at random. Several people were killed in these attacks.

Larger waves of attacks
According to the British Ministry of Defense, Russia is using different tactics in its missile and drone attacks on Ukraine. Russia has most likely decided to allow more time to pass between attacks since August 2024 to build up supplies, the British further wrote.

With these combined mass attacks, the Russian army is overloading Ukrainian air defenses. In addition to the actual combat drones, Russia also uses so-called decoy drones that are loaded with little to no explosives. This forces Ukrainian anti-aircraft forces to waste valuable ammunition.
