The Vienna fire brigade has been busy with two fires in recent days. While a dry Advent wreath caught fire within seconds and a woman was injured trying to extinguish it, the cause of the fire in rubble in the parking lot of a vacant store is still unclear.
Emergency services were sent to Donaustadtstrasse on Saturday evening. As eyewitnesses recorded on their mobile phones, flames in a parking lot were already rising several meters high and setting the surrounding trees on fire. Wooden furniture and plastics went up in flames behind an empty store, fire spokesman Lukas Schauer confirmed.
Tennis hall saved from flames
Thank goodness 29 men were able to prevent the incident from spreading to a nearby tennis hall. Rescue services were also on site, but no one was injured by the flames. The cause of the nighttime inferno is still unclear, but a possible arson is of course possible.
Dry brush burns in seconds
There was also a fire in Hietzing on Sunday evening. A woman’s excessively dry Advent wreath caught fire within seconds and also set the kitchen table on fire. The tenant desperately tried to extinguish the fire himself and was injured. 27 men from the professional fire brigade went out in six vehicles and extinguished the Advent wreath with a so-called bucket sprinkler. The adjacent apartments have been checked and the stairwell has been pressurized. The woman herself was taken to hospital.
