Become part of the nation’s largest citizen science campaign. From January 4 to 6, 2025, the bird protection organization BirdLife Austria is calling for the “Hour of Winter Birds”. Here’s how you can get involved.
The practical activity ‘Hour of Winter Birds’ offers a good opportunity to get to know the diversity of the local bird world and perhaps discover something new. Whether in the garden, on the balcony, from the window or in the park – every bird watching counts!
Important data for bird research
With this annual initiative, which has already established itself as a popular tradition among bird watchers, BirdLife Austria aims to get the most accurate picture possible of winter bird life in our cities and towns. Populations have been declining for years; many species are at risk due to global warming, increasing soil sealing and agricultural intensification.
“Counting is not so much about determining exact inventory numbers, but rather about identifying long-term trends. Each count is just a snapshot, but still a valuable component. Even if you don’t see a bird, that is important information for us!” emphasizes Gábor Wichmann, director of BirdLife Austria.
Once completed, all observation data will be collected and reviewed. A national evaluation is then carried out based on bird species, population numbers, population trends and observation locations.
Participation pays double
This year there is also the option to upload photos and videos to a gallery. A prize will be awarded for the most beautiful photo: stunde-der-winter Voegel.at/foto-video-upload. And as a thank you to everyone who reports their bird sightings, BirdLife is giving away great prizes such as high-quality binoculars, feeding equipment, bird surprise boxes and much more.
