In southern France, about 800,000 people have no mobile phone reception and only limited television reception after a suspected arson on a telecommunications mast.
The fire in the 90-meter-high transmission tower in Cenves near Lyon took place on Monday evening, broadcaster France Info reported, citing network operator TDF (Télédiffusion de France). The regional director spoke of an “undoubtedly criminal act”.
The background is still unclear for the time being
The damage is extensive and every effort is being made to fully restore reception within 24 to 48 hours. Technicians and police were on site. The background is still unclear.
But it is not the first time that transmission systems have been hit by sabotage, TDF said. Only in the summer, on the sidelines of the Olympics, did an anarchist group claim responsibility for setting fire to a transmission tower, the company said.
