On Monday evening, a Lauda Motion Airbus was diverted from Vienna to Brno. According to reports, the GPS signal was already disrupted during the flight over Poland. This is not unusual due to the war in Ukraine, but the onboard system normally works again once the fault zone is left.
The Airbus took off from Riga Airport (Latvia) on Monday at 7:38 PM and flew in a southwesterly direction over Poland and the Czech Republic. The aircraft started its descent towards Vienna near Olomouc (Czech Republic). However, she never arrived there. As the aviation magazine ‘Ausrian Wings’ reported online on Tuesday, the pilots had tried to land twice without success. The machine was not on the track axis, but next to it.
The reason could have been a disrupted GPS signal. According to the captain of the flight, the signal had already been disrupted during the flight over Poland and was still not working properly over Vienna. Moreover, the weather was bad in Vienna on Monday evening. The crew therefore decided to make an alternate landing in Brno, Czech Republic. The plane landed safely there around 11 p.m.
Standard procedure
According to the aviation magazine, such an alternative landing is a standard procedure “if – for whatever reason – it is not possible to land at the actual airport.” The decision was “perfect and absolutely professional,” the report said, “even though it obviously caused inconvenience to the passengers.”
