The Bruck an der Mur volunteer fire brigade was in demand at four locations from December 31 to January 1. In addition to one room fire and two hedge fires, the waste room of a residential building was also affected. All residents had to be evacuated and twelve were injured.
It was anything but a quiet start to the new year for the fire brigade in Bruck an der Mur. On the morning of December 31, the busy New Year’s Eve began for them: the Red Cross and the police also arrived. A fire had broken out in a kitchen, but fortunately the resident was able to extinguish it almost entirely himself.
Shortly after 6pm the Florianis were called to a hedge fire. After retreating to the armory, a similar alarm went off again shortly before midnight: a firecracker had caused a fire on the embankment at the top of the castle hill. “Unfortunately, due to our efforts, we only had a limited amount of time to admire the fireworks,” wrote press spokesman Manuel Kilian.
The biggest mission of the evening was yet to come. At 1:20 a.m., the garbage room of an apartment building began to burn. A respiratory protection team marched into the building to rescue the residents; the rest of the team immediately began extinguishing the fire.
A total of twelve people were injured in the fire, four of whom had to be taken to LKH Hochsteiermark with suspected smoke poisoning. The cause of the fire is still unclear, detectives are already at work.
