According to American media, the perpetrator in New Orleans was carrying an IS flag. The FBI had previously discussed terrorism. At least ten people were killed and more than 35 others were injured when they drove into a crowd on Wednesday evening (see video above).
On Wednesday evening it was finally announced that the perpetrator was carrying a flag of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS). Two researchers confirmed this to CNN. There were also several homemade objects that could be explosive in a cooler in the back of the pickup. The US Federal Police (FBI) had previously spoken of a “terrorist act”.
More details are now known about the man who killed at least ten people with his pickup on New Year’s Eve. Investigators say he is 42 years old and was wearing military clothing at the time of the crime. The FBI confirmed the man’s death a few hours after the incident. It was said that a shootout took place between him and the emergency services. The perpetrator shot at passers-by from the car.
A great event is about to happen
The man tried to “run over as many people as possible,” police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick said. “We were in the middle of the street and were able to run onto the sidewalk and hide in the entrance of a building. We heard gunshots and saw police officers running,” said eyewitness Jim Mowrer. When no more shots were heard, he left his hiding place. He saw injured and dead people on the streets.
The attack took place at 3:15 am (local time, 10:15 am CET). There were many New Year’s Eve parties in the affected French Quarter entertainment district, including LGBTQ parties and a drag show. The Sugar Bowl, a football game for which many fans traveled to the city, was also scheduled for New Year’s Day in New Orleans. This should also happen according to plan.
