On Wednesday afternoon, a fire broke out in the waste room of a multi-purpose hall in Kalsdorf (Styria). Ashes that have not cooled completely may have been emptied into the bins. A first responder probably inhaled smoke.
Around 12:30 p.m., the fire brigade, rescue services and police were called to a multipurpose hall in Kalsdorf. The 110 square meter garbage and storage area was completely ablaze when we arrived.
Witnesses said that on the morning of New Year’s Day, supposedly chilled ashes were placed in garbage bags and brought into the room. The ash may have ignited and started the fire.
Suspected smoke poisoning
40 Floriani from Kalsdorf and Fernitz were finally able to bring the fire under control within an hour. A Red Cross first aid worker barely escaped: she was taken to the Graz West State Hospital with suspected smoke poisoning. There was also significant material damage, of an as yet unknown amount.
