Customs dealt a serious blow to product pirates in November. A total of more than 5,000 counterfeit luxury items were seized, most of which were clothing.
Vienna Airport in Schwechat (Lower Austria) – in addition to the ever-growing number of passengers – has always been considered a hub for international freight traffic. Many products that reach Austria from far abroad or only cross the country on their trade route have to pass through here at some point. However, not everything unloaded from planes from distant countries is legal. For example, goods that are confusingly similar to the designers’ originals, but are often copied with poor quality and sold cheaply.
Louis Vuitton, Gucci and many Nike items
As has only now become known, in mid-November, customs officials in the airport’s cargo area managed to strike a major blow against product piracy.
In four shipments from Thailand, which were actually only supposed to go via Austria and were intended for buyers in Great Britain and the Netherlands, customs found 5,121 counterfeit brand products. This included imitated luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton or Gucci, as well as countless sporting goods imitated by the Nike brand.
1,402 pairs of shoes, 1,279 bags and backpacks, 415 sports shirts, 378 caps, 193 jackets, 318 jewelry, 115 belts and 318 tracksuits were seized. Finance Minister Gunter Mayr was satisfied: “Product piracy is not a trivial offense!”
