Can he do that? Heino sings “Gypsy Song” in Munich

Date:

He came as a surprise guest and brought his hits: the Kitzbühel-based folk singer Heino performed in Munich at the Oktoberfest. He also sang ‘Gypsy life is funny’ – and 3,500 guests happily sang along. Gypsies? A controversial term for their ethnic groups among Roma and Sinti…

Wherever he performs, people give him a standing ovation. At this concert, they even stood on the benches. As a surprise guest and at the invitation of an insurance company, Heino recently appeared in Munich at the Oktoberfest in the Vroni tent. A success, because 3,500 spectators were enthusiastic. But the reverberation is still powerful afterwards.

Tent guests text safe
The performance had been planned for a long time, but no one revealed the show secret. At 7:30 p.m. he was there: Germany’s most famous singer and probably Kitzbühel’s most famous resident, Heino. From “Blue Blooms the Gentian” to “Rosamunde” and “Layla”, everything was there and interesting: “The entire festival tent was sure of the lyrics and waved along to ‘Funny is the gypsy life'”, says his manager and intimates in an interview with the “Krone”. But is Heino allowed to do that?

In principle, the word ‘gypsy’ is a very controversial expression (and not just since yesterday), which many Roma, Sinti and Yenish people, to whom it refers, reject as discriminatory. “Heino lived with such people at the time. So nothing is further away from him than wanting to discriminate against them,” says Helmut Werner about the incident, which is now likely to go viral with the video (see above). Because no one in the tent stops the bard. On the contrary, the 3,500 guests roar and sing along.

“Let’s not ban it!”
For Werner and his artist, the matter is clear: “The song has been sung for 200, 300 years. And it is only negative for those who interpret it negatively.” As long as the song is not banned, “Heino will sing it. Because people enjoy it. And until then, we will not let it stop us!”
